Both (A) and (R) are true and (R) is the correct explanation of (A).
Explanation — At Chauri Chaura in Gorakhpur district, on February 4, 1922, a procession of peasants was fired upon by the police. The infuriated demonstrators set the police station on fire, killing 22 policemen. Gandhiji, a firm believer in Ahimsa, was greatly shocked and called off the whole movement on February 12, 1922. The violence at Chauri Chaura was therefore the direct reason for the suspension of the Non-Cooperation Movement.
