(x + 3), 1, (3x − 7) and −5 are in proportion. The value of x is :

  • (a)−1
  • (b)1
  • (c)−5
  • (d)5
Show SolutionHide Solution↓

Given,

(x + 3), 1, (3x − 7) and −5 are in proportion.

$$\begin{aligned}\therefore \frac{(x + 3)}{1} = \frac{(3x - 7)}{-5} \\[1em] \Rightarrow (x + 3)= \frac{(3x - 7)}{-5} \\[1em] \Rightarrow -5(x + 3) = (3x - 7) \\[1em] \Rightarrow -5x - 15 = 3x - 7 \\[1em] \Rightarrow -5x - 3x = 15 - 7 \\[1em] \Rightarrow -8x = 8 \\[1em] \Rightarrow x = -\frac{8}{8} \\[1em] \Rightarrow x = -1.\end{aligned}$$

Hence, option 1 is the correct option.

For a body to be in dynamic equilibrium, its:

  • (a)momentum should be zero
  • (b)acceleration should be zero
  • (c)kinetic energy should be zero
  • (d)velocity should be zero
Show SolutionHide Solution↓

acceleration should be zero

Reason — A body is said to be in dynamic equilibrium when it is moving with uniform velocity. It means that the body is not at rest, its velocity is constant and hence its acceleration is zero.

Therefore, for dynamic equilibrium, acceleration should be zero.

A non-metal which reacts with concentrated sulphuric acid to form two gases which turn lime water milky is ............... .

  • (a)Sulphur
  • (b)Carbon
  • (c)Oxygen
  • (d)Nitrogen
Show SolutionHide Solution↓

Carbon

Reason — Carbon (a non-metal) reacts with hot concentrated sulphuric acid to form two gases — carbon dioxide (CO2) and sulphur dioxide (SO2). Both these gases turn lime water milky.

C + 2H2SO4 [conc.] ⟶ CO2 + 2H2O + 2SO2

Biology

Four friends P, Q, R and S were discussing the examples of genetic disorders. The examples they quoted were as follows:

P. Colour blindness and Malaria

Q. Albinism and Cholera

R. Haemophilia and Colour blindness

S. Haemophilia and Albinism

Who gave the correct examples?

  • (a)P and Q
  • (b)R and S
  • (c)P and R
  • (d)Q and S
Show SolutionHide Solution↓

R and S

Reason — Malaria and Cholera are not genetic disorders. They are caused by plasmodium and bacteria respectively. Haemophilia, Colour blindness and Albinism are genetic disorders.

Dear Grandma,

I’m comfortably and cosily settled in my new flat. It’s a

delightful set-up offering an enchanting view of a small

garden. But the best thing is the cute, compact kitchen

– almost the size of my palm. But grandma, it is super

convenient with all the appliances in place.

Thanks to you, I have developed my culinary skills

to perfection. I can toss an omelette in a jiffy and make

pancakes to perfection. You also taught me to bake,

steam and fry with no oil sticking to the fritters, and I

enjoy preparing all the stuff. My heart fills with nostalgia

as I think of the ways you persuaded me to learn this ‘survival’ skill. But now I have taken it to the next level.

I enjoy cooking and am really mindful of what I eat and

how I eat.

It’s all because of you, dear Granny. I wish that every

lazy girllike me had a loving soul like your to motivate her

to find her hidden skills.

Hope to hear from you soon. I’ll send some pictures

of my flat and yes, especially of the kitchen.

Warm regards,

Yours lovingly,

Mini

Sub: Request for a bus stop

Dear Sir,

The commuters in Perambur district between the railway

station and office complexes are facing considerable

inconvenience due to the lack of properly designated

bus stops. They have to walk a long way to access public

transportation. The elderly and physically challenged

individuals suffer the most.

A bus stop at the location would provide better

accessibility and convenience to the commuters. There

will be fewer three-wheelers and other vehicles jamming

theway.Besides,thiswillenhancecommercialpossibilities

too, empowering the economy of the surrounding rural

areas.

We kindly request you to consider this proposal and

initiate the necessary steps to establish a bus stop at a

suitable location between the Perambur railway station

and the commercial areas. Thank you for your time and

attention.

Yours faithfully,

Shaan Prabhakar
